Welcome to the CA ARCserve Backup for Windows r16.5 Release Summary.
This Release Summary describes new features, functional and usability enhancements, and dropped support included with CA ARCserve Backup r16.5 and subsequent update releases.
This section describes the new features included with CA ARCserve Backup r16.5 and r16.5 updates.
The following sections describe the new features added to the r16.5 release.
In this release, CA ARCserve Backup supports the following Microsoft Windows 8 and Microsoft Windows Server 2012 features:
In this release, CA ARCserve Backup now supports backing up data to LTO6 drives. LTO6 drives offer higher capacity and improved performance over previous drives, such as LTO5.
CA ARCserve Backup also supports the functionality of Logical Block Protection (a feature LTO6 supports) offered by manufacturers of stand-alone tape drives, such as IBM and HP. LBP lets CA ARCserve Backup detect read and write errors that occur on library drives.
The CA ARCserve Backup implementation of LBP does not support the following backups:
Example: Data deduplication and staging backups
This release of the CA ARCserve Backup Agent for Microsoft Exchange Server 2013 now includes support for the following Windows operating systems:
This release of the CA ARCserve Backup Agent for Microsoft SharePoint Server 2013 now includes support for the following Windows operating systems:
The following sections describe the new features added to the r16.5 Update 2 release.
In this release, CA ARCserve Backup no longer requires you to install the agent on the virtual machine for VMware systems when performing raw (full VM) backups with file level restore enabled. However, it is still required to install the agent when performing a restore.
Note: In r16.5, there are two ways to run incremental backups for Mixed mode backups: run it through the agent which is installed on the VM or through the VDDK on the proxy server. With the Update 2 release, it is no longer required to install the agent on the VM, therefore the only option to run incremental backups for Mixed mode backups is through the VDDK on the proxy server.
In this release, CA ARCserve Backup now includes a new Transport Mode for VMware VM option when selecting a type of backup mode for Agent for Virtual Machines. This new feature can be found in the Global Options dialog for backup and recovering virtual machines.
Note: This feature only applies to VMware systems.
In this release, CA ARCserve Backup no longer requires you to reset the Changed Block Tracking feature manually. The CBT can now reset automatically when an issue occurs.
Note: This feature only applies to VMware systems.
This section describes the usability and functional enhancements made to the product in r16.5 and r16.5 Updates such as changes to the user interface, changes to licensing, setup, and deployment, and documentation changes.
The following sections describe the enhancements made to the r16.5 release.
You can now configure network attached storage (NAS) devices to communicate using a specific port or a range of ports. To define the custom ports you modify the PortsConfig.cfg configuration file manually.
In this release, CA ARCserve Backup lets you archive data to three additional regions of Amazon S3 cloud storage:
Currently, we have Bucket Region AP Singapore, EU Ireland, US Standard, and SA East (Sao Paulo).
In addition to versions 2.0 and 2.0.2, this release of CA ARCserve Backup now supports the following versions of Eucalyptus:
In this release, the CA ARCserve Backup base product now supports the following cloud providers:
With this release, VMware VDDK 5.1 is automatically installed with CA ARCserve Backup. You can use VDDK 5.1 to back up virtual machines.

Data Deduplication
Microsoft SQL Server AlwaysOn Availability Groups (AAG)
CA ARCserve Backup r16.5 Update 1 introduces enhancements and corrects problems that were discovered with CA ARCserve Backup r16.5. The following behaviors were updated:
With this update, you can now modify the following registry key to increase and decrease the size of the buffer read process for all input and output operations:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ComputerAssociates\CA ARCServe Backup\ClientAgent\Parameters\ FileBufferSize
Default: 512k
Range: Up to 2048k (based on the available system resources)
With this update, CA ARCserve Backup now no longer skips files that are associated with Windows Server 2012 operating systems. Previously, CA ARCserve Backup could not read and back up various files that reported by system state writers. For example, AppCompat and BranchCache. The Client Agent for Windows now protects files that reside on the Windows system volume using the VSS option.
Previously, the binary coded decimal (BCD) for the system was overwritten by the Client Agent for Windows. To correct this behavior, the client agent for WindowsClient Agent for Windows now does not restore the BCD configuration when you perform standard (not disaster recovery) restore operations.
Previously, the Client Agent for Windows did not back up folders named boot and bootmgr that reside on the system volume. Folders of this type were backed up as part of the system state. For normal volume backups, the agent added these folders to the exclude files list. In UEFI environments, the agent did not get the system volume and added folders named boot and bootmgr that existed in any volume to the exclude files list. As a result, backups of these folders failed.
With this update, the agent no longer adds folders named boot and bootmgr that reside in any volume to the exclude files list when the agent cannot get the system volume.
Previously, backups of this type did not complete successfully because of the difference between the block sizes of D2D uncompressed backups and CA ARCserve Backup backups.
With this update, CA ARCserve Backup now creates a 2MB backup buffer when backing up uncompressed D2D backup sessions. This approach allows backups of this type to complete successfully.
Note: This behavior was detected when backing up CA ARCserve D2D r16.5 with CA ARCserve Backup r16.5.
With this update, you can control the quantity of threads that are used to read and the quantity of the maximum blocks that can be read at a time. To control the quantities, modify the following registry keys:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ComputerAssociates\CA ARCServe Backup\ClientAgent\ParametersD2DreadThreadPoolSize HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ComputerAssociates\CA ARCServe Backup\ClientAgent\MaxConsequetiveD2DBlockReads
As a best practice, match the number of threads with the available CPU cores by changing registry key named ParametersD2DreadThreadPoolSize. You can further optimize the disk IO using the MaxConsequetiveD2DBlockReads registry key.
The Client Agent for Windows uses a flag named ConnectToD2DServer in the CA_Liteintegration.ini file that is located in the agent installation folder.
Location:
C:\Program Files\CA\ARCserve Backup Client Agent for Windows.
The agent uses the CA_Liteintegration.ini file to determine whether to connect to the CA ARCserve D2D server to retrieve the details about the destination or retrieve the details from the cache file (CA_Liteintegration.ini). For RHA scenarios, set the value of the flag to 0 so that agent that is running on the replica server does not connect with the original D2D server for the details about the destination.
Example:
C:\Program Files\CA\ARCserve Backup Client Agent for Windows [server_name] ConnectToD2DServer=0 Destination=\\devpr01-test2\E\devpr01-2K8sp2
The following sections describe the enhancements made to the r16.5 Update 2 release.
CA ARCserve Backup lets you install VMware VDDK 5.1.1 to back up VMware-based virtual machines. As a best practice, you should install VDDK 5.1.1 in your backup environment.
To enable this capability, you change the VDDKDirectory registry key in the following file on the backup proxy system:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ComputerAssociates\CA ARCServe Backup\ClientAgent\Parameters
Then replace it with the new directory location where VDDK is installed. For example:
C:\Program Files (x86)\VMware\VMware Virtual Disk Development Kit
Be aware of the following:
The features described in the following sections are not supported at this time by CA ARCserve Backup r16.5.
CA ARCserve Backup for Windows r16.5 no longer includes support for the following systems and platforms:
These changes affect all CA ARCserve Backup r16.5 agents and options.
CA ARCserve Backup for Windows r16.5 no longer includes support for VMware Consolidated Backups (VCB).
These changes affect all CA ARCserve Backup r16.5 agents and options.
In this release, the WinPE (Windows Preinstallation Environment) Disaster Recovery CD is no longer integrated with the CA ARCserve Backup Installation DVD. You now need to create the WinPE Disaster Recovery CD manually.
During installation, CA ARCserve Backup provides a link to download the Windows Assessment and Deployment Kit (Windows ADK) for Windows 8 and Windows Automation Installation Kit (AIK) for Windows 7 from the Microsoft website. With Windows ADK or AIK installed, you can create Windows WinPE disaster recovery images to recover computers running the following operating systems from a disaster:
This release of CA ARCserve Backup Agent for Microsoft Exchange Server (including the Update 1 and Update 2 releases) does not support document level backups on Microsoft Exchange Server 2013. A patch will be available after the General Availability release of the agent for this capability.
